Our Story

The Kiwi Way

At Appleby Farms we always knew that our milk was too damned fine to send off in a big tanker—and being that we lived in a place famous for its produce, we knew we could make something special. So we went and crafted the most incredible ice cream the world has ever tasted. It sounds simple, but took years of research and determination.

If there’s one thing Kiwis excel at, it’s rolling up our sleeves and applying a bit of hard work and ingenuity to create something unforgettable. Perhaps it’s our isolated location in the South Pacific; or maybe our underdog nature; one thing is certain, something this good deserves to be shared with the world.

Meet Julian & Murray

Round here, farming’s in the blood—and for third- and fourth-generation Nelson blokes like Murray and Julian, that’s no throwaway line.

Neighbours, mates, and staunch believers that dairy should be done the old-school way, they figured milk ought to be full of goodness, not numbers. So they rolled up their sleeves and spent over a decade doing what no one else bothered to—breeding a herd that’s 100% A2-certified, through and through.

It wasn’t fast, and it sure wasn’t easy. But that’s the thing about Kiwis—we don’t mind putting in the graft when we believe in something. And these two? They believed in better milk, the kind your grandparents would nod proudly at.

Our Sweet Spot in Nelson

Since that very first scoop hit the cone back in December 2017, we’ve come a fair way. These days, we’ve got our own creamery tucked away in sunny Nelson—just a short drive from Murray and Julian’s farms.

Built from the ground up, this little slice of ice cream heaven lets us keep everything close to home and close to heart. It means we can craft every batch with the same care we started with—no shortcuts, no compromise—just damn good ice cream, made right here.

Doing Right by the Land

Murray and Julian come from a long line of folks who’ve worked this land—170 years and counting. So looking after it isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a family tradition.

We’re backing local sustainability efforts and environmental projects that help keep our patch of the world thriving. But we’re the first to admit—we’re not perfect (yet).

We’re chipping away at everything from our on-farm practices to our packaging, always looking for ways to tread a little lighter. It won’t all happen overnight, but we’re in it for the long haul. Thanks for sticking with us as we figure it out, one step at a time.
